Meet the SCRL Team
Office Staff
Cathy Ching - Director of Library Services
Hi. I am Cathy Ching, Director of Library Services. May 2004 was the first chapter of my adventures with South Central Regional Library. I began as the Morden Branch Librarian and loved my job. 10 years later I took the big leap and moved to the head office in Winkler as the cataloguer and office manager. 2 years later I became Director.
Times have changed in my 20+ years with SCRL. There is faster internet, digital downloading of books and movies, and we now have puzzles, games and Nerf Battles in our libraries! We have grown from 3 branches to 5 and are recognized as leaders in the Manitoba library community.
Throughout the years I have had great staff, some who have been with us for 30+ years. I have also come to know so many of the wonderful people who use our libraries and value your support for our libraries.
I am looking forward to our 60th year as a Regional Library because we have many things to celebrate, and we know that we would not be successful without all of you. Join us in recognizing our many achievements as we are “Shining Bright!”

Joanna Dueck - Cataloging Technician
Joanna’s library career started back in 2013 when she worked as a page in the Winkler branch for three years. She left to study Library and Information Technology at Red River College for two years, and after graduating with her Library Technician diploma, she returned to work at SCRL as a casual clerk in Winkler, Morden, and Altona. In 2017, she transitioned to cataloguing as an intern.
She currently works as the Cataloguing Technician for all of SCRL, and her favourite part of the job is unboxing the deliveries of new books and developing the board game collection!
Her main tasks are receiving and cataloguing all the new items that are ordered for SCRL’s collection. When our branch admins select their new books, she submits all the orders through our vendor, and is in charge of purchasing DVDs, junior and young adult audiobooks, playaways and board games for all 5 branches! Throughout the year she assists Raina, our Office Manager, with finding prizes for Bookland Explorers Club and other events.

Branch Staff
Altona
The Altona branch staff total 10 staff; 5 clerks, 2 pages, 2 casuals and the branch admin, Rachael Friesen
Q: How long have you been with SCRL?
Rachael: It will be 10 years in 2025
Q: What does your role as branch admin entail?
Rachael: This is a hard question to answer, as we do a lot as the admin. Scheduling, ordering, stats, various other admin tasks, helping at the front in some branches, daily tasks that make sure the library runs smoothly, etc.
In addition to that I also take care of our website and most of the tech related items for all of SCRL, including most of the IT tasks and any new roll outs of databases or electronic resources. Because I have some extra tasks I take care of, I really rely on my team to pick up any additional slack and they deliver every time. Our branch would not run as well as it does without all their hard work.
Q: What are some of your favorite programs you have run at the branch?
Rachael: Nerf Battles and Paint Nights
Q: What is your favorite thing about working at the library?
Rachael: Everything. I like that I have many different tasks and jobs, I never get bored and I always have something to do (except billing, I hate billing, lol, our new system makes this much easier).

Q: What are some of your favorite programs that your branch has run?

In October of 2013 I began working as a clerk at the Winkler Branch and continued to work in both branches for several years. Throughout my time as a clerk, I have held various other positions in the library including a two year tenure as head of the safety committee and safety rep for the Winkler Branch, as well as programming clerk for all of SCRL.

Jess: While there are many things I enjoy about the library, programming is my favorite.
There is nothing better than seeing a kid come into the library excited about the Bookland Explorers program or one of the workshops or activities.
Q: What are some of your favorite programs that your branch has run?
Jess: One of my favorite programs was dinosaur month. We had a month of dinosaur themed activities including dinosaur tracking and a fossil dig. The Canadian Fossil Discovery Centre also did a presentation on fossils and we ended the month with a Jurassic Park movie night.
Q: What is your favorite thing about working in the library?
Jess: My favorite thing about working at the library is seeing how excited patrons are when they find a new book or author.
